水 • 琴 • 窟

The installation 水•琴•窟 is a collaboration between photography/installation artist Lane Diko and sound artist Simon James French.

The title, pronounced sui (水) kin (琴) kutsu (窟), is the name of a traditional acoustic device found in traditional Japanese gardens. The suikinkutsu (or water harp) is an inverted ceramic vessel buried beneath a Japanese garden’s stone water basin. When water drips through a small opening at the top, it falls into the hollow within and the vessel resonates with sound. Without the hand of any musician, the instrument produces an evolving, infinitely varied soundscape, flowing through bamboo pipes to listeners in the garden. The sounds used in this work were recorded at Enkōji Temple in Kyoto and subsequently processed and shaped by French.

水•琴•窟 is installed in two spaces in The Terminal: along the engawa passageway next to the nakaniwagarden and inside the bōkūgō bomb-shelter beneath the building. The underground space suggests the reverberating chamber of the suikinkutsu, and the engawa is the space above, where listeners can enjoy the sounds while viewing the garden.

The photographs were taken in and around Kyoto and were selected and presented in keeping with the theme “Pause.” Diko observed that moments of pause are not in fact still or silent, but spaces in which we become aware of the continuous motion surrounding and within us: the movement of wind, shifts of light, as well as our own breath, heartbeat, and stream of thoughts. The “floating” format, the sound of the suikinkutsu, and the images of water, fish, insects, and birds draw viewers to pause and appreciate the infinite and unceasing flow of existence.

インスタレーション作品「水琴窟」は、写真家／インスタレーション・アーティストのレーン・ディコと、サウンド・アーティストのサイモン・ジェームズ・フレンチによるコラボレーション作品です。

タイトルは「すいきんくつ」と読み、日本庭園に見られる伝統的な音響装置の名称でもあります。水琴窟は、日本庭園の石造りの水鉢の下に上下逆さまにして埋め込まれた陶器の瓶（甕、かめ）です。上部の小さな穴から水が滴り落ちると、振動が瓶の空洞で反響・増幅され、音を発します。演奏者の手を介さず、竹管を通して庭の人々に届けられ、静かに連なりながら変化し続ける音を生み出します。本作で使用されている音は、京都の圓光寺で録音され、その後フレンチによって加工・編集されています。

「水・琴・窟」は、ターミナル内の二つの空間に設置されています。ひとつは中庭に面した縁側の通路、もうひとつは建物の地下にある防空壕です。地下の空間は水琴窟の響きが生まれる空洞を想起させ、縁側は庭を眺めながらその音に耳を傾けることのできる地上の場となっています。

写真は京都とその周辺で撮影されたもので、「Pause（間）」というテーマに沿って選ばれ、展示されています。ディコは、立ち止まる瞬間とは決して静止や無音ではなく、むしろ私たちの周囲や内側で絶えず続いている動き――風の流れ、光の移ろい、そして自らの呼吸、鼓動、思考の流れ――に気づくための空間であると捉えています。

宙に浮かぶような展示形式、水琴窟の音、そして水、魚、虫、鳥を写したイメージは、鑑賞者をひととき立ち止まらせ、存在の無限で絶え間ない流れへと意識を向けさせます。
