Biography

2003 Apprenticed under Akio Iguchi, a master of traditional joinery (chōdo sashimono)

2009 Established his independent practice

2015 Appointed President of Kuroda Workshop

2023 Certified as a Selected Preservation Technique Holder (fusuma and architectural fittings)

Currently serves as a board member of the Association for the Transmission of Traditional Techniques

Associate Member of the Japan Kōgei Association

Certified Traditional Craftsman

Artist Statement

Usui seeks to honor wood that has lived for decades, even centuries, using it with care and respect. As cultural properties are preserved for future generations, he is dedicated to carrying forward and sustaining Japanese cultural traditions.
