古良慕
■略歴
明治35年創業の古材商「島村葭商店」を母体とし、
2012年にカフェギャラリー「古良慕」をオープン。
代表の島村義典は「島村葭商店」の五代目であり、
祇園で料理人を務めた経験から、古材事業の傍ら
カフェではランチの提供も行っている。
「島村葭商店」では、建築に導入する資材としての
古材をメインに扱う一方、「古良慕」では古家具や
古民具を見立てによって面白く飾りたて、
お客様に愉んでいただくことを心がけている。
■一言
古材は、一度はその役割を終えて廃棄されることとなった素材です。
その素材を蒐集して綺麗に磨き上げ、過去の役割の跡である仕口や手斧のはつり、
経年変化によって生まれた浮作り、日焼けや囲炉裏の煙によって燻された
色の変化に美しさを見出すのが私たちの仕事です。
古材はその杢目や使用された環境、使われた時代などによって
それぞれに表情が違い、全てが一点ものです。
その表情をよく観察し、どのように使うか、過去の役割の跡を
どのように活かすか、時には見立てによって工夫し、
新しい役割を見出すお手伝いをさせていただいております。

Korobo
Profile
Rooted in Shimamura Yoshi Shoten, a reclaimed timber business founded in 1902,
the café gallery Korobo was established in 2012.
Its owner, Yoshinori Shimamura, is the fifth-generation head of Shimamura Yoshi Shoten.
Drawing on his experience as a chef in Gion, he continues the reclaimed timber business
while also serving lunch at the café.
While Shimamura Yoshi Shoten primarily handles reclaimed wood as architectural material,
Korobo presents antique furniture and folk tools in thoughtfully curated displays,
inviting visitors to discover their unique charm and character.
Statement
Reclaimed wood is material that has once fulfilled its original role and was destined to be discarded. Our work lies in collecting these materials, carefully restoring them, and revealing their inherent beauty—from joinery marks and adze-hewn surfaces to the textures shaped by time, sunlight, and smoke.
Each piece carries a distinct expression, shaped by its grain, the environment in which it was used, and the era it comes from—making every item truly one of a kind. By closely observing these qualities, we consider how best to give each material a new life, sometimes reimagining its purpose through creative reinterpretation, and helping it find a meaningful role once again.
