This year we asked KJ friend and contributor Rebecca Otowa to come up with some designs for New Year postcards.

Children’s toys make popular New Year motifs in Japan. These postcards feature the dendendaiko traditional pellet drum, kokeshi wooden dolls that originate from the hot spring towns of northern Honshu and have become extremely popular collectors items in recent years; and the daruma charm, made in the image of the Bodhidharma and whose eyes you should paint after New Year to symbolize one goal you wish to achieve in the following 12 months, and the other one once said goal has been achieved.

About Rebecca:

Rebecca Otowa, who hails from the US via Australia, is an artist, and author of three books. At Home in Japan: A Foreign Woman’s Journey of Discovery recounts her experiences as the housewife, custodian and chatelaine of a 350–year–old farmhouse in rural Shiga. Her latest work, a collection of short stories The Mad Shoe Swapper is out now. Read more about her here.
