BETWEEN STEPS
In my series “The Angel’s Flights” I’ve been photographing public stairs on hillsides all over Los Angeles. I have a parallel series called “Between Steps” wherein I walk with my camera along the streets and paths that connect the many stairways. Between Steps has a double meaning.
It literally means between two staircases on a loop walk, yet it also refers to taking the time to pause one’s steps while engaging in the practice of deep seeing photography. The whole idea of slowing down to pause and notice, to see deeply, is crucial to mindful and contemplative photography.
The practice of deep seeing allows me to receive, clarify, and offer what presents itself on my walks. It is my hope that not only will my photographs document the curious hillsides of L. A. but inspire others to walk this town where it is said nobody walks.
ステップの間
私のシリーズ「天使の階段」では、ロサンゼルス各地の丘陵地帯にある公共の階段を撮影してきました。並行して「階段の合間」というシリーズも展開している。ここではカメラを携え、数多くの階段をつなぐ通りや小道を歩く。このタイトルには二重の意味がある。
文字通りループ状の散歩路で二つの階段の間に位置することを指す一方で、深く観察する写真の実践に没頭するため、歩みを止めて立ち止まる時間を取る行為をも暗示している。立ち止まり、気づき、深く見つめるためにペースを落とすという発想そのものが、意識的で思索的な写真撮影において極めて重要です。
深く見つめる実践は、散歩中に現れるものを受け入れ、明確化し、提供することを可能にします。私の写真がロサンゼルスの興味深い丘陵地を記録するだけでなく、誰も歩かないと言われるこの街を歩くきっかけを人々に与えることを願っています。

He is Professor Emeritus in Photography at Cerritos College, and is the resident Lopon at Southern California Region Yeshe Nyingpo. He is currently focused on practicing and teaching Deep Seeing: a meditative approach to photography.
