Kyoto Journal is proud to be a media partner of artKYOTO 2024. This festival will contemplate the theme of “enduring beauty,” honoring Japanese aesthetic sensibilities passed down for generations, with artworks that span several eras. Sixteen different galleries and art dealers will exhibit crafts (kogei), antiques, modern and contemporary art, available both for appreciation and for purchase.
artKYOTO is an art fair that originated in 2019, with the aim of sharing select pieces from galleries and art dealers, at locations well-known for their world heritage and cultural significance. This diverse collection of art, ranging across genres from contemporary masterpieces to antique crafts, is designed to blend with the historical and cultural background of such spaces to create an extraordinary exhibition.
In addition to featuring works of spectacular beauty, artKYOTO will take place in Shōsei-en Garden, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. It will run from Thursday, October 31st until Sunday November 3rd (closed Friday November 1st). Only 10 minutes from Kyoto Station on foot, Shōsei-en, the detached garden of Higashi Hongan-ji, is famed for seasonal floral beauty, poetry, Noh, tea ceremony, and other Japanese cultural / literati traditions. The artKYOTO art fair will be held in five historic buildings, against the natural backdrop of a classic strolling-garden (kaiyushiki-teien).
Exhibited artworks will include masterpieces by modern ceramic masters and contemporary craft artists shown by Shibuya Kurodatoen Co., Ltd. (Tokyo). MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY (Tokyo) will feature impassioned works by Japanese and international artists, and Ritsuki Fujisaki Gallery (Tokyo) will showcase unique perspectives of up-and-coming artists. Prominent Japanese galleries, including the highly reputed Oriental Fine Arts Yanagi (Kyoto), gallery shirushi (Ashiya) and KANEGAE<KOGEI Next>, will collaborate to present a booth highlighting the rich artisan traditions and cultural heritage of the region.

After enjoying the art fair at Shōsei-en Garden, you can further enjoy the charms of art and Kyoto with an additional program held at Gallery Kochi in Maruyama Park. The gallery will showcase seven prints by five artists who have been pivotal in shaping the direction of contemporary art in Japan. This is also a rare opportunity for first-time visitors to gain special access to the gallery bar, Bar Kun, which was produced by legendary bartender Minoru Nishida and is typically available only by introduction. This bar is renowned for Yukihiko Kurihara’s folding screen, “Spring Evening,” and a courtyard garden where the changing seasons can be appreciated. The whiskey and coffee served at Bar Kun are made with pure water drawn from a well on the premises. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Japan while savoring the lingering afterglow of artKYOTO.
